Heritage Homes is Japan’s leading experts in sourcing, acquiring, restoring and selling culturally significant Japanese heritage buildings.
Heritage Homes Japan is a small team of dedicated professionals, all with a passion for restoring Japan’s beautiful architectural heritage. We are very niche and very focused; we work predominantly with pre-war Kyoto Machiya (shophouses) and traditional farmhouses.
These are the essence of traditional Japanese homes, and it is our privilege to preserve and restore them for future generations.
Our master carpenters trained in joinery traditions passed down for generations. dismantle every structure piece by piece, restore or replicate each element, and prepare it for its new life. Not a single nail is used.
We rebuild your farmhouse on your land, to full modern building code, with contemporary amenities throughout. Niseko, Hakuba, Hakone, Karuizawa or anywhere else in the world you choose.

Sourcing & Acquisition
We find heritage properties that rarely reach the open market, and guide overseas buyers through every step of purchase.
Restoration & Renovation
We rebuild old houses for modern living while preserving the timber and craftsmanship that give them character.
Project & Build & Management
We manage renovation from first survey to final handover, coordinating every trade so you don’t have to.
Buyer Guidance & Advisory
We make buying in Japan clear for foreign buyers, from ownership and licensing to taxes and market realities.

The old shophouses (Machiyas) are a huge part of the very fabric of this 1,800-year-old Imperial City — but are facing the threat of demolition. We bring our skills to Kyoto to save them.
Should you choose to purchase and renovate a home from us, we can assure you of the very best service, the highest build quality, and fair and transparent prices.
