Stunning, 100+ year old Marchant Machiya in historic Nishijin district
Very large and beautifully preserved classic Kyoto Marchant Machiya for sale. These types of Machiyas, consisting of two houses with an interconnecting gardens, were built in the Edo and Meji periods by wealthier merchants and small factory owners. Business, the greeting of customers and / manufacturing took place in the house facing the street, and the family would live in the building in the back, thus separating trade from family life.
As these Merchant Machiyas take up much larger plots than normal Machiyas, most of them in the centre of Kyoto have been demolished and replaced by apartment buildings from the 1930’s onwards. To find a Machiya such as this, and so carefully preserved, is therefore very rare indeed. The structure itself has been completely overhauled in recent years, all the original features have been retained, and the main building now just needs updating, apart from one wall which is leaning needs to have a reinforcement put in.
The second large building in the back (plans and pictures coming soon) has not been touched at all and needs a complete restoration.
Located in a quiet part of the historical textile district of Nishijin, you have lovely restaurants and shops within 3-4 minutes walk, and you are less than 5 minutes away from the Imperial Palace. Despite this, the price is less than half of what you would pay for a similar property in, say, Shimogyo, probably less.
We cannot recommend this property more highly; if you are in the market for a grand, beautiful and typical Meji period residence, this is definitely the one for you.
